The study covered 203 drivers of commercial trucks from the period 2004 to 2007 and installed video cameras on their vehicles to monitor their activity and behavior.

Using a mobile phone and sending text messages while steering a vehicle is considered a dangerous act. This is because the eyes of a driver are directed to the phone's keypad as his hand types a message to send to another person.

Compared to simply answering a call, texting while on the road is more high risk. This is the main reason why some 14 states have imposed a ban on texting while driving. Maryland is the latest to impose a driver-texting ban that took effect this October 2009. Some train and bus operators have followed suit as well.

Information from government transportation agencies revealed that in 2008 alone, an estimated 37,200 people got killed on U.S. roads and about 11 percent of these deaths were caused by large trucks.
